Mingan Archipelago National Park, Havre-Saint-Pierre, Quebec

We are docked in this small town on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. We were late getting here as the ship had to proceed slowly as a Right Whale was spotted last night.

We are going to Ile Quarry via a smaller boat to meet with a Parks Canada presenter for a 3-kilometre hike. We hope it will be more of an excursion than the last hike which was about the length of a football field.

We had dinner at the sushi bar last night where we dined on a variety of dishes - all excellent. We gained an extra hour and a half last night so woke early and went for breakfast at 7:00. When we got back to our room, we discovered that we had ordered room service for breakfast and had a full meal waiting here for us. Talk about scatterbrained, senior moments, and brain farts - and both of us had them at the same time!

Our jackets were in the room last night and we found them to be too big so we hope to exchange them today. Fingers crossed.

The Mingan Archipelago consists a chain of approximately 40 islands and we are only going to get to explore one of them. The limestone rocks have been carved into some wonderful shapes by wind and water and are called monoliths.

We boarded a small boat and had a half-hour cold windy ride to Quarry Island where we were met by a Park Guide. A Minke whale had been spotted but alas it dove and we missed the sighting. We set out on a boardwalk with our guide passing through various habitats - boreal forest, bogs, fens, and stony beach where the monoliths were located while the Park Guide pointed out various interesting plants. It was only 600 metres to the beach with the monoliths. We mentioned to our Scenic guide that the walk was supposed to be 2.9 Kms. He looked at us as though we were crazy. We pointed out that the tour was supposed to be 3.5 hours and we would be arriving back at the ship an hour early. No, we were wrong, he said. Then the Park guide checked her notes and realized her mistake. We were proven right. The Scenic guide hadn't read the write up about the tour he was on. We were NOT impressed. On the way back, the boat captain took a short detour so we could admire more of the monoliths on a different island.

Once back on shore, we adjourned for some more of that delicious Asian soup at Koko's. We are now back at our cabin enjoying the bright sunshine and warm weather - high of 21C today - before getting ready to steam and freeze and, of course, nap.
